"No freeze distilling needed. This beer has been barrel aged 10 times on different bourbon barrels. It took us two years to bring the imperial stout Black up from the original 18% ABV to the amazing 26.1%.

How about the taste? There is a reason it is called the “Black Fist”. Decant it as we suggest in the serving tips, and you will have a mindblowing experience. This beer is complex."

    Serving tips
    • Refrigerate bottle the day before
    • Take bottle out of the fridge at least 1 1/2 hours before serving
    • Open and decant like wine
    • Leave at room temperature
    • Serve at minimum 15°C / 59°F in small glasses
    Specifics
    • Manufacturer: Mikkeller ApS
    • Location: Copenhagen, Denmark
    • Style: Imperial Stout
    • ABV: 26.10%

    I've Had That

This is one crazy beer. For starters, it's brewed by Mikkeller ApS (the owner being the twin of Evil Twin Brewing... more on that here: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/30/magazine/a-fight-is-brewing.html?_r=0) - it is an Imperial Stout that has been barrel aged 10 times, bringing the ABV up to 26.10%! Coming in 12 oz. bottles, the beer is priced at $30, which makes it the most expensive I've ever bought! On paper, it is similar to beers like Sam Adams Utopias (though it can't be corked like Utopias, it needs to be drank in one shot). One interesting thing about this beer is that it isn't freeze-filtered, i.e. the alcohol level is brought up by the barrel-aging, rather than freezing the beer and then melting off the water.

I followed the beer's instructions (which are kind of confusing (do you take out of the fridge and decant for 1.5 hours, or take out of the fridge for 1.5 hours and then decant?)) and split it into 3 small glasses, I would recommend splitting into 4 or 5 glasses. This is one of the darkest and inkiest beers you will ever see!

Smell: oak, bourbon, dark fruits, espresso
Taste: licorice, soy sauce, whiskey, malted barley, lots of charred oak, vanilla, ethanol, raisins, Citrusy hops, some sort of acidity.
    Finish: dry and boozy

This is definitely a beer you'll need an excuse to buy, I would recommend splitting the cost with a few friends just to try something crazy. I think this beer may have spent a little too long in the barrels, as it's just too oaky. It's dry and bitter and I think the oak has imparted some sort of acidic flavor that just seems to eat away at your palate. Take small, slow sips because it's just so intense. The first 1/3 of my glass was interesting enough to keep me drinking, but by the end, I just felt barraged by the strange flavors and had to refuse finishing off my buddy's extras as well. An experience for sure.

That is like next level brewing. Ive never thought of ever using a decanter for beer. 26 ABV... now that is sick!

I'm still not sure what to think of it. I can't say as I would go out of my way to get it but I'm glad I tried it.
